Bridesmaids

I finally got around to watching Bridesmaids. I don’t have much to say about the actual movie. It was funny but slow and bland. It’s nice to see a female character allowed to be really pathetic, but the Annie character never developed a personality and her arc felt forced. Ultimately forgettable.

I can’t get over the choice of playing Paper Bag by Fiona Apple during a mini-montage of Annie baking and eating a cupcake. It’s a song about eating disorders over a freaking cup cake montage. (And no, it’s not done “ironically).  Who okayed that?

Hunger hurts, but starving works, when it costs too much to love”

Seriously. I was also annoyed by the movies constant attempts to brand Annie as the fat version of the not actually bitch but presented as hateable new best friend. We see Annie, played by Kristen Wigg, in her underwear in the first scene and she is very slim with no more than 20% body fat. Yeah, maybe Annie is a size 4 and the new girl is a size 0, but that doesn’t make Annie “normal sized.”

Eating disorders are, sadly, forgotten or misrepresented by films, both mainstream and independent. It’s too bad my previous project flailed out. The lead was struggling to recover from an eating disorder. I get that it’s a depressing topic, but it would be nice to see something better than a half-baked story line of the week on some teen soap. Which is not a knock on teen soaps. I’d kill to get a job writing on Degrassi.
